How effective are online piano lessons?
Studio piano lessons, conducted in person with an experienced teacher, are the gold standard. Online piano lessons can be effective when used in alternation with studio lessons or as a temporary means to continue regular lessons when circumstances prevent coming to the studio. Unfortunately, sound quality transmission is compromised over the Internet, and pedagogical approaches often require physical presence. That being said, with a well-placed camera and a decent microphone, much can be taught effectively online, including hand position, piano technique, accuracy, rhythm, memorization, scales, chords and arpeggios, etc.
